But why the uniform size is very important? 

When the particle distribution is not uniform, the filling is not uniform, and some parts are only composed of large particles. The solvent flows quickly without any resistance. When some parts are small particles, the flow resistance is large and the flow rate is slow. The solvent always flows along a path with low resistance. This flow nonuniformity will affect the separation effect.
